A collection of terms used in Endless Oceans that are either different from their usage in real life, or are not used at all in real life.
- Magic: A system of unscientific acts caused by individuals that bend the known rules of physics and nature. A skilled practitioner of magic can force the natural world to bend to his whim based upon set forms known as spells. Magic is categorized into two specific forms: Arcane and Divine. All magic creates an aura around the caster that can be perceived by Syfalians, though this trait is apparently not shared by the outside world.
- Arcane Magic: Magic that is learned through study and personal discovery. A practitioner of Arcane magic requires no power source but himself, and it is therefore more reliable than Divine magic, though occasionally less powerful. Arcane magic is further divided into the eight schools of Abjuration (defensive magic and wards), Conjuration (creation or transportation), Divination (sensing or discovering), Enchantment (influencing thoughts and emotions), Evocation (manipulation and creation of energy), Illusion (deception and false creation), Necromancy (manipulation of life energy), and Transmutation (transformation and mutations). Most arcane practitioners focus on one or two schools to the exclusion of the rest, though generalists, referred to as “Universalists”, do exist.
- Divine Magic: Magic that comes from a source without and beyond the caster, usually a God or similarly deific power, from which the name is derived. Despite that, not all Divine magic comes from gods, and can in fact come from deep belief, whether that resides in nature, an elemental force, or even just an ideal, such as courage, justice, or compassion. Divine magic, unlike Arcane magic, is not divided into schools, and instead stands as one unified variation of magic. Individuals spells can be classified into schools, though Divine casters do not specialize in them, as do Arcane casters.
